Alexii Privacy Policy

In short: Alexii does not collect, store, or transmit your data to us. All data stays on your device or is sent directly to the AI provider you configure with your own API key.

1. What Alexii Does

Alexii is a browser extension that assists with legal research on CanLII. It reads case text from CanLII pages you visit and uses AI to help you chat with cases, generate briefs, compare decisions, and build arguments.

2. Data We Collect

None. Alexii has no servers, no accounts, no analytics, and no tracking. We do not collect any personal information or usage data.

3. Data Stored on Your Device

Alexii uses Chrome's local storage (chrome.storage.local) to save:

Your settings — chosen AI provider, API key, model preference, and theme
Bookmarks — case passages you save for reference
Notebook entries — research notes you create

This data never leaves your browser. It is not synced to any external service and is deleted when you uninstall the extension.

4. Data Sent to Third Parties

When you use Alexii's AI features, case text from the CanLII page you are viewing is sent to the AI provider you configure:

Anthropic (Claude API) at api.anthropic.com, or
OpenAI (GPT API) at api.openai.com

These requests are made directly from your browser to the provider's API using your own API key. Alexii does not proxy, intercept, or store these requests. Your use of these APIs is governed by the respective provider's terms and privacy policy:

activeTab — to read case content from the page you are viewing
storage — to save your settings, bookmarks, and notes locally
contextMenus — to provide the right-click "Get Gist" feature
tabs — to detect when you navigate to a CanLII case page and to load comparison cases
Host permissions for canlii.org — to run the content script that reads case text
Host permissions for api.anthropic.com / api.openai.com — to send AI requests with your API key

6. Data Shared With Us

Nothing. We have no server infrastructure. There is no mechanism for any data to reach us.

7. Your API Key

Your API key is stored locally on your device in Chrome's extension storage. It is only used to authenticate requests directly to your chosen AI provider. It is never transmitted anywhere else.

8. Children's Privacy

Alexii is a professional legal research tool and is not directed at children under 13.

9. Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a revised date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance.
